In 1991, a dreamer, named Carlo Latini, restarted to cultivate this ancient Italian variety. This was the first wheat type that took part to the ENSE (National Institution Elected Seed) in 1915. The brilliant geneticist Nazzareno Strampelli from Castel Raimondo near Macerata, was the first to select this great durum wheat. Gem of our farming, the wheat is narrated in history books in the story the Battle of the Wheat. At the time, Strampelli increased the production per hectare, from 9 quintals to 20, 25 quintals. A huge economic success for the farmers at that time.
